A Hidden History of CT Union Soldiers a book by John Banks of ESPN will detail the more than 50,000 Connecticut men and boys who served in the Union army during the Civil War. Among them is a 16th Connecticut chaplain, who as a prisoner of war disregarded a Rebel commander's order forbidding him to pray aloud for President Lincoln and a 7th Connecticut private who was tormented by the ghost of a comrade, whom he had murdered in battle. These and other horrific stories are examined in Banks new book so please join the author as he shines a light on many of these long-forgotten Connecticut Yankees which will be presented at the Bristol Historical Society, 98 Summer Street, Bristol, on September 8th at 7pm, $5 for non-members free to members, refreshments will be served. Sherlock Holmes and the Speckled Band by William Gillette @ BPL

The East Haddam Stage Company presents performance of the recently discovered 1930 radio drama version of William Gillette’s script for Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Speckled Band with the attendees becoming the studio audience. In the production, 4 actors portray 7 characters, (including a sound effects table!). It is a 1-hour presentation consisting of a 15-minute intro by the producing artistic director, which covers radio shows in general from the mid-20th century, discovering the script, and how ours came to be produced. The New England Carousel Museum is looking for volunteers to assist us in various tasks in and around the Museum.

If you have an appreciation for art, history and the preservation of the past, or are simply looking to join a great group of individuals please consider joining our roster of Museum volunteers. As a volunteer, you can set your schedule as you are available and willing to donate your time. Volunteers receive a free one year membership to the Museum, invitations to Museum events and enjoy a sense of community within our organization.


We need volunteers in the following areas:

Maintenance & Repair both inside and outside the building
Children's Programs
Office/Clerical Assistance
Raffle Sales Help
People with pickup trucks to help on an as needed basis with moving things

Parents of children with challenging behaviors are invited to attend this free group, which will provide an opportunity for parents to share their experiences coping with challenging behaviors. The group will provide the opportunity for parents to come together to gain knowledge, education, and support, while developing new skills to deal with their child’s behaviors. A light meal will be served at each meeting. This group is partially funded by grants from the Petit Family Foundation and the Douglas and Noreen Schumann Special Interest Fund, the Bristol Savings Bank Fund, and the Eva M. Pierce Fund at the Main Street Community Foundation.

It was after seeing and visiting with Leonore Alaniz, a local nature printer, that Ron decided that he wanted to take his love of Botany and turn it into works of art.

Many of the pieces that will be on display for the show will be nature prints. Some of the work involves preserving and mounting the actual plants themselves as well as mixed media work where both actual plants and paintings come together

Originally from Kent, CT, Ron works as a Biological lab instructor at Bridgewater State University in Bridgewater, MA. He always had a love of plants and holds a Master’s Degree in Botany from the University of Connecticut in Storrs.

"Remembering Tom" A Blackledge Memorial Concert at The New England Carousel Museum

Blackledgemusic,Inc. will be performing a program of chamber music for diverse instruments. June 26 was to be Blackledgemusic,Inc.'s first concert at the Carousel Museum in 2016, life having interfered with scheduling and funding. We were excited to be featuring a diverse instrumentation with Tom Labadorf on clarinet and Amy Jones on viola as the core. Tom went on vacation in early June and died in a motorcycle accident in Tennessee.

Blackledgemusic, Inc. wants to honor Tom and all he has done by performing Claude Debussy in an arrangement by an Italian trio which Tom liked and was purchased for the June concert. Other works on the program will feature flutes, viola, guitar and double bass. The works will include, Divertimento by Joseph Michael Haydn for flute,viola and double bass,Trio for Flutes - Lazlo Zempleni ,Corcovao - Darius Milhaud (Flute & Guitar), Pavanne – Maurice Ravel,Reverie - Claude Debussy (arr. Eros Roselli) Flute, Clarinet & Guitar, Scarborough Fair - Mari's Wedding - (Flute Trio)Arr. Jennifer Cluff , Black Pool - Greg Bartholomew (flute, viola, double bass), Duo – Jules Massenet arranged for Double bass and Contrabass flute, Theme for a Drive - Debra Stempien (C flute, Alto Flute, Bass Flute), Four Elegiac Sketches (Fl,vla,gtr). Each October a Bristol tradition comes alive, the Witch’s Dungeon invites all to a lair of creepy and fantastical sets with creatures from classic horror films. Witch's Dungeon is celebrating 50 years of delighting audiences from Bristol and all over the world this year! The non-profit museum has been open since 1966.

Enjoy famous movie props, classic movies shown on film, popcorn, and of course the Witch’s Dungeon tour, with life-size wax figures of your favorite frightful classic horror movie characters from the Fly to the Wolfman! "What a fantastic venue this will be...it looks like something out of an Edgar Allan Poe story. Congratulations!" - Mark Hamil. Admission is a donation of $6 per persona and benefits the non-profit organizations of The Witch's Dungeon and The Bristol Historical Society.
