BRISTOL, CT (WFSB) - One person and a dog died in a house fire in Bristol on Thursday.

Bristol fire chief Rick Hart confirmed to Channel 3 that the deadly fire happened on Pequabuck Street.

In an update Monday, fire officials identified the woman as 65-year-old Elizabeth Perera. Her cause of death is pending an autopsy.

They said the fire started in the kitchen.

A neighbor saw the smoke and dialed 911 around 9:15 a.m.

Firefighters said they put the fire out in about 20 minutes; however, it was too late for the woman and dog.

Firefighters said the home was also condemned.

“Our guys arrived on scene, [there were] reports of someone inside,” said Deputy Chief David Butkus, Bristol Fire Department. “We made a push inside. [There was] heavy fire inside the building. My tower crew got on scene [and] found the victim, pulled the victim out.”

“It’s a tragic event, these are very difficult times,” said Mayor Jeff Caggiano. “Condolences to the family. I just want to stand by our firefighters, protecting people.”

The development in which the house was constructed was built in 2021.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
