Felicia Ortner, a Connecticut Master Wildlife Conservationist (MWC) and a bear enthusiast, will provide education and facts about bears and help dispel myths and common misunderstandings. Accumulated data supports the black bear is seldom aggressive toward humans. Felicia has been studying about bears for over 30 years. In the mid 1990's Felicia turned her passion for learning about bears into a passion for teaching about them. She created an education program called The Bear Reality. In 2008 Felicia developed a presentation for bear education programs she presents on a volunteer basis. Her audiences include libraries, nature centers, conservation groups, scouts and more. Since then, Felicia has provided presentations reaching over 8000 people at programs in CT, NY, MA, NH and, VT. Felicia believes outreach and education is key in having a better understanding about the life and behavior of bears. Hopefully this will lead to a higher tolerance which is instrumental in creating a strategy of coexistence between humans and bears. ? Bears in Our World and Backyard ? In this child and family inclusive program for the month of November, Jessica Maak, ELCCT Volunteer, will teach us about animals here in CT that either hibernate or migrate for the winter. We will discuss what the term ‘true hibernator’ means as well as discuss what the terms ‘hibernation’ and ‘migration’ mean while exploring one of our shorter nature trails here at the Barnes Nature Center. As we walk, we will also discuss what types of habitat, animals who hibernate, look for in the forest as potential hibernation spots.

Jessica Maak came to be a volunteer for ELCCT through her own personal interest in environmental education, sustainability, preservation, and the overall joy it gives her to be involved in outreach programs in general. Jessica has worked for DEEP at Sleeping Giant State Forest, Nature’s Classroom, and The National Audubon Society at Bent of the River, and is currently a preschool teacher.

St. Paul Performing Arts Performs Inspirational True-Life Holocaust Drama Veterans Weekend
Date: Friday, November 10, 2017 (Event Views: 1,972)

Many courageous people during the Holocaust risked their liberty and their lives to help the persecuted Jews escape the torture that awaited them if Nazi soldiers found them. Marsia Pawlina Szul was one such person. This play is the story of her courage in harboring a mother, her newborn boy, young daughter, and another young Jewish girl. Pawlina led the Nazi soldiers away from the family, hiding in a homemade bunker in their barn for two years. When she was discovered, she suffered unspeakable torture by the Nazis, yet she remained silent.

Angel in the Night is the winner of the American Alliance for Theater and Education’s Distinguished Play Award. This play is inspiring, even more so because it is based on the real actions of one brave young Polish woman. The characters are loveable— we suffer with them throughout the play-and we are grateful to learn of love, respect, and adoration the Jewish characters feel for Pawlina, their savior during World War II. She is honored now in the Avenue of the Righteous Parks found outside Jerusalem and in Evanston, Illinois. Don’t miss your chance to see Connecticut’s award-winning high school theaters’ production of this true store of courage, compassion and heroism!
What Parents Should Be Aware of In Angel in the Night
Parents need to know that this Holocaust drama, explores some mature themes about WWII, captivity, and self-preservation, religious persecution, and perseverance. There are a couple of disturbing images of the war on a newsreel film in the prologue as well as some scenes of violence with the lead characters. This performance is suitable for children in grades 8 and above. Should parents have any concerns about the production feel free to contact the director, Mark Mazzarella 860-584-0911. We recommend knowing if your child has had an introduction to the Holocaust in school.

Angel in the Night opens on Friday, November 10th and runs through Sunday, November 12th at the St. Paul Catholic High School’s Theater. Performances are at 7pm Friday and Saturday with a 2pm matinee on Sunday.

Tickets go on sale October 16th. $8 students, $15 adults, $12 over 65. Tickets may be reserved and purchased online at www.spchs.com or purchase by calling the school: 860-584-0911.

St. Paul Performing Arts Performs Inspirational True-Life Holocaust Drama Veterans Weekend
Date: Sunday, November 12, 2017 (Event Views: 1,903)

In this teen and adult program for the month of November, Jessica Maak (ELCCT Volunteer) will take us on a guided walk on one of our trails at the BNC and discuss the types of flora one can keep on one’s property to help birds eat well into the winter months as seeds and insects will no longer be available. We will then discuss what types of bird feeders are most useful to the winter birds that stay here in CT.
