Ella May Wiggins & The Songs of the American Labor Movement
Date: Saturday, May 19, 2018 (Event Views: 228)

Saturday March 19 @ 1:00 PM.

Woody Guthrie called Ella May Wiggins the “Mother of the protest ballad.” Ella May was also known as the “poet laureate” of the 1929 Loray Mill strike in Gastonia, NC, where she was shot and killed by strike-breakers at the age of 29. Music, poetry and ironic humor were hallmarks of the early American labor movement. Ella May’s music inspired folk singers like Peter Seeger and Woody Guthrie and influenced the fabled Little Red Songbook of the Industrial Workers of the World (“Wobblies”).

Join us & sing-a-long with a lively program of historic labor songs and backstory.
Music performed by Elizabeth Friedmann.

No charge. RSVP at the library, at www.bristollib.com, or by calling: (860) 584-7787 x 2023.
