2018 Northeast Historic Baseball All-Star Event

October 14 @ 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm

On Sunday, October 14, 2018, the Bristol Historical Society in collaboration with Team Bristol will be hosting a double header vintage baseball game at Muzzy Field.

Billed as “The 2018 Northeast Historic Baseball All-Star Event,” players from the New England states will compete in two separate games: the first by 1864 rules and the second by those of 1865.

The teams will be dressed in authentic period uniforms and compete with vintage equipment on a playing field without a pitcher’s mound, as was the standard of the day. The score will be posted on a blackboard and announcements made through a megaphone.

Play will begin at 12 noon and last until approximately 4 PM. Admission is free and children are welcome. Join us to take a step back in time and see how American’s favorite pastime was played and enjoyed over 150 years ago.

Joey’s Teal Pumpkin Party   (381,793 Views)

Joey’s Teal Pumpkin Party

October 19 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Who is Jumpin’ Joey?
Joey is a seven year old child, living in Bristol, CT. Joey is courageous child who fights thru the effects of Common Variable Immune Deficiency (CVID), Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome (FPIES), Environmental & Food Allergies, Asthma, and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) every day. These disorders all are identified as Rare Diseases. Despite all the chronic life threatening illnesses he has, Joey has always been a high energy, bouncy, happy child. He earned his nick name “Jumpin’ Joey” as a toddler when he first learned to bounce. He hasn’t stopped Jumpin’ since!

What is a Teal Pumpkin Party?
Joey’s Teal Pumpkin Party, is a unique Halloween themed event open to children who are in grades pre-k-8 within the town of Bristol, CT. Our goal is to show families that trick or treating can include children with food allergies, (and other rare diseases), in a safe, fun, and affordable way. Candy does not need to be eliminated. Adding affordable non-food toys, and novelties, placed in a separate bowl for those who cannot eat candy is a simple way to include everyone on Halloween.

At The Party:
Children will trick or treat thru a walking path, stopping along the way at Treat Stations. Each treat station will have a Halloween Inflatable, and a volunteer will hand out a “treat” to each child. The majority of the treats will be non-food items such as pencils, erasers, small toys, etc. A few will have candy treats.

Once Children have completed the Treat Trail, they can stop at Carrot Alley Craft Area, to make some festive crafts.

Families may also have dinner by purchasing food from one of the Food Trucks, which will be at the event. Food will be a separate charge paid directly to the Food Truck.

What is Jumpin’ Joey’s Journey?
Jumpin’ Joey’s Journey, is a 501(c)3 charity, on a mission to create fun events throughout the year so rare disease pediatric patients and their families can create happy memories outside of the medical setting. These events will serve as the platform for us to also spread awareness, and education for rare disease.
All donations to Jumpin’ Joey’s Journey are tax exempt per the Federal IRS 501(c)3 tax code, EIN 83-0654227.

How will the money raised be used?
Proceeds from Joey’s Teal Pumpkin Party will be donated to our Joey’s Family Retreat Program which is scheduled to launch Summer of 2019. We plan to send families in Connecticut that have children who battle rare diseases on small cost-free camping trips. You can check out this program online at www.jumpinjoeysjourney.org and you can buy your ticket online.

“Trunk-or-Treat” is a Halloween event where people gather and park their cars in a large parking lot. They open their trunks, or the backs of their vehicles, and decorate them. Then they pass out candy from their trunks. The event provides a safe family environment for trick or treater. Your “trunk” can be simple or elaborate…it’s up to you. If you are representing a business or organization, perhaps a theme in support of your business would be fun. Please be prepared to accommodate at least 2000 children.

Blood Donation Opportunity   (359,321 Views)

Blood Donation Opportunity

October 23 @ 1:00 pm - 6:00

Donors of all blood types are needed to help ensure a sufficient supply for patients this fall, especially after Hurricane Florence and subsequent flooding forced the cancellation of more than 6,000 blood and platelet donations last month.

How to donate blood

Make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or for more information. As a thank-you, those who come to donate blood or platelets in October will automatically be entered to win one of five $500 gift cards redeemable at hundreds of merchants. Learn more at RedCrossBlood.org/GoForGoal.

All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. To get started, follow the instructions at RedCrossBlood.org/RapidPass or use the Blood Donor App.

About the American Red Cross

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. For more information, please visit RedCross.org or CruzRojaAmericana.org, or visit us on Twitter at @RedCross.

Radium Girls Program  (389,061 Views)

The Radium Dial Painters: Their Fatal Brush with Death

Behind the story of the clock and watch industries’ success, lies a tragic story of employee sacrifice. For a time, little was known about the toxic working conditions of the young women in the dial painting industry. Fortunately, their story was eventually heard. Program: 6:30 p.m.
Location: American Clock & Watch Museum, 100 Maple St., Bristol
Presenter: Colleen Nicastro, Director of Interpretation
Fee: $5 for museum members,$7 for non-members

Seery Strings presents Barnstar! at the Ingraham House   (301,824 Views)

Seery Strings presents Barnstar! at the Ingraham House

October 26 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Please join Seery Strings in welcoming Barnstar! to the Ingraham House Concert Series!

Barnstar! began as the brainchild of Zachariah Hickman (bassist for Josh Ritter, musical director for Ray Lamontagne) for a local bluegrass supergroup featuring some of Boston’s best musicians and songwriters. Using the familiar tools of the genre—guitar (Mark Erelli), fiddle (Jake Armerding), mandolin (Taylor Armerding) and banjo (Charlie Rose)—Barnstar! forges its own brand of song- based bluegrass, gloriously harmonized and raucously played.

These guys are going to burn it up in our grand foyer! This show is not to be missed.

As always, this is an all ages show.

We ask for a donation of $25 per person and provide delicious food and age-appropriate refreshments throughout the evening.

Book Talk & Signing with Judith Giguere, Author of “The Ghosts of Chippeny Hill”

Those loyal to England in Revolutionary War times were known to gather on Chippeny Hill, located in the northeast corner of Bristol (then, New Cambridge), Harwinton and Plymouth. Called the Tories, their stories are today’s legends, ghosts, and myths —the very fabric of early Connecticut. Born and raised in Terryville, and currently the official Plymouth Town Historian, Judith Giguere is also the author of “Plymouth Revisited.” Copies of her latest book will be available for purchase and autographing after her talk. Please register in advance by calling or visiting the library.
