Recycling 101 Workshop  (33,014 Views)

Recycling 101 Workshop
FEBRUARY 1 @ 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM

Bristol residents are invited to a Recycling 101 Workshop to be hosted by the City of Bristol Public Works Department. Learn how to divert food waste from the waste stream to create organic material that can be added to soil to help grow plants. Food scraps and yard waste together currently make up about 30% of what we throw away, and should be composted instead. Making compost keeps these materials out of the landfills where they take up space and release methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

Sherill Baldwin from the State of CT Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP) will be presenting attendees with an update on what does and doesn’t go into the blue recycle bins.

No registration required. The workshop will be held at the Bristol Public Library in Meeting Room 1. FREE and open to all.

For questions or for more information, please contact Bristol Public Works at 860-584-6125.

This workshop and free materials are funded by an annual grant from Covanta to being workshops and programs to the Bristol community.

Before Brooklyn: The Unsung Heroes Who Helped Break Baseball’s Color Barrier  (62,325 Views)

Before Brooklyn: The Unsung Heroes Who Helped Break Baseball’s Color Barrier
Tue, Feb 7, 2023, 6:30 PM
Online via Zoom
Sponsored by Bristol Public Library

With Author and reporter/writer Ted Reinstein of WCVB-TV, Boston.

In the April of 1945, exactly two years before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in major league baseball, liberal Boston City Councilman Izzy Muchnick persuaded the Red Sox to try out three black players in return for a favorable vote to allow the team to play on Sundays. The Red Sox got the councilman’s much-needed vote, but the tryout was a sham; the three players would get no closer to the major leagues. It was a lost battle in a war that was ultimately won by Robinson in 1947. This book tells the story of the little-known heroes who fought segregation in baseball, from communist newspaper reporters to the Pullman car porters who saw to it that black newspapers espousing integration in professional sports reached the homes of blacks throughout the country. It also reminds us that the first black player in professional baseball was not Jackie Robinson but Moses Fleetwood Walker in 1884, and that for a time integrated teams were not that unusual. And then, as segregation throughout the country hardened, the exclusion of blacks in baseball quietly became the norm, and the battle for integration began anew.

Presented online via Zoom. no charge. Valid email required to register.

RSVP: bristollib.com, 860.584.7787 x 3, at the library.

SEED LIBRARY RIBBON CUTTING & SQUARE FOOT GARDENING WORKSHOP  (19,238 Views)

SEED LIBRARY RIBBON CUTTING & SQUARE FOOT GARDENING WORKSHOP
CITY OF BRISTOL SEED LIBRARY WILL LAUNCH ON FEBRUARY 23RD

Bristol Public Library and the Public Works Department have partnered to launch Bristol’s first Seed Library. The mission for Bristol’s Seed Library is to provide residents with seeds so they can create their own gardens. The Seed Library, which was funded by a grant from Covanta, will include many varieties of seeds for residents to choose from – vegetables, herbs, and many varieties of flowers.

Bristol residents are invited to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony to be held on February 23, 2023 at 6:00 pm at the Bristol Public Library. Seeds will be available for residents who have a valid library card with a limit of 5 seed packs per library card.

“Seed libraries provide a mechanism for community service that is closely aligned with many of the traditional core values of public librarianship, including facilitating access, equity, lifelong learning, and community engagement. We are excited to be offering this wonderful opportunity for our patrons!” – Deborah Prozzo, Director, Bristol Public Library

After the ribbon cutting ceremony attendees are invited to join us downstairs in Meeting Room One to enjoy light refreshments courtesy of the Friends of the Library and to hear Dan Williams, our guest speaker, talk about how to create a square foot garden. The presentation will begin around 6:30 pm. A drawing for raffle prizes will also be done after the presentation. Whether you live in an apartment, house or condo, Dan will teach you how to build your square foot garden in eight easy steps.

“This is an amazing opportunity for our community to start a garden, but have not had the means or knowledge to so. With the variety of seeds offered and the Square Foot Gardening Workshop, I think the residents will be off to a great start in creating their very own garden.”
– Lindsey Rivers, Public Works Analyst
